“FROM DEAL MAKING TO DEAL SHAPING” INTERVIEW WITH EMMA-JANE NEWTON

I was delighted to recently sit down with Emma-Jane Newton, Finance Director of Telstra Consumer & Small Business. EJ spent a number of years working in Investment Banking where she advised on numerous mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, equity and debt capital raisings. As Head of TMT and Education sectors, EJ worked in Melbourne, London, New York, and Sydney with Credit Suisse before joining Telstra in mid 2015.

EJ spoke about her career logic of moving from “deal making to deal shaping” with Telstra. Now leading a team of 100 for a $16bn business unit we explored leveraging her core skills and expertise and developing new skills.  We discovered how the team remains agile and innovative; and the importance of managing stakeholders – be that external Investors or how customer experience is critical in managing relationships. The importance of investing the time in those relationships and gaining different perspectives was clear from our discussion.
