I was pleased to recently catch up with Nigel Dews, Director at Port Jackson Partners. Nigel spent his early years working at McKinsey then joining Fairfax during the dotcom era before moving into Telco. Here he led the 3 mobile before becoming CEO of Vodafone Hutchison Australia. Nigel returned to Management Consulting four years ago, I was curious to explore how the world of Management Consulting has evolved in recent times.

Nigel passed comments on the growth of Management Consulting as an Industry – albeit strategic work around growth strategy vs. process or change programs are very different types of engagements; and typically offered via different types of firms. Nigel shared some views around individuals coming out of Business School and selecting their chosen career pathway post an MBA.

I couldn’t resist posing the question around the balance of Strategy vs. Execution, and the role of the modern day Management Consultant. What was clear was the importance of understanding the pain points of any Client, providing empathy and delivering practicality and valued outcomes. Talented Consultants are the ones that understand customer’s problems by listening hard, who approach a problem with energy and naturally related to their clients.
